Rescue Experience:
- MAGDRL member since March, 2001, adopted
four MAGDRL Great Dane orphans.
- Volunteered at eastern Maryland Meet & Greets almost
every weekend for the past three years and serve as co-coordinator
for this area. In 2002, 2003, & 2004 served as volunteer photographer
at a Maryland Santa Claws fundraiser at PetSmart weekends in December.
Volunteered at week-long Great Dane Nationals fundraisers in 2002
and 2003. Volunteered at other MAGDRL events as requested.
- Co-coordinated Maryland 2003 MAGDRL Parade of Paws Dog
Walk fundraiser. Coordinated MAGDRL 2004 and 2005 (in progress)
Maryland Dog Owner’s Education Brunches.
- In the past 4 years made over 2,000 phone calls to adoption
and volunteer applicants in MD, DC, and NorVa. Continuously volunteer
to perform dog intake evaluations, transports, and applicant housechecks.
- Wrote the MAGDRL “Cookbook for our Canine Friends”
sold as a MAGDRL fundraiser.
- Proposed and won MAGDRL board and member approval for
fencing exception process.
- Contributor to MAGDRL Rescuer’s Record newsletter.
Wrote local newspaper articles on Puppy Mills and to promote adopting
from rescue.
- Developed adoption applicant brochures on training, feeding,
volunteering, fostering, kids & Danes, and introducing Great
Danes to current dogs.
- Developed MAGDRL Foster web FAQ posted on main MAGDRL
web site.
- Developed and maintain personal MAGDRL events Internet
site to showcase volunteer activities here: http://www.lissa.net/Joya/MAGDRL.htm
- Conceived of first MAGDRL Holiday Card photo contest in
2004. Established photo release policy, coordinated submission
of photos, set up voting, arranged printing for what will become
an annual fundraiser.
- Became an AKC Canine Good Citizen (CGC) tester in 2004;
completed the AKC exam and was approved as a CGC tester again
in 2005.
- Developed “Dog Owner Education” weekly e-news
emails to educate members on dog related topics.
- In previous years, testified at Baltimore City and Prince
George’s county hearings in favor of dog-related legislation
as an elected official. Established relationships with key officials
to benefit local dog-related causes

teaching. Web site development and technical expertise. Writing
and research, media design and graphics.

Vision for MAGDRL: To build an all volunteer
organization that is the role model for successful non-profit dog
rescues. To form alliances with other rescues, shelters, canine
support organizations and businesses to increase public education
and awareness, pool resources, and gain support for a human’s
best friend.
2007/2008 Accomplishments

Continued to support MAGDRL donations from vehicle donations through the DonationLine program.

Coordinated volunteer support and worked at the 2007 GDCA National Specialty in Lancaster, PA. Our team raised $6,758 for MAGDRL orphans.

Wrote the MAGDRL Privacy Policy to inform visitors about use of personal information submitted to our web sites and in their adoption paperwork.

Wrote ongoing contributions to MAGDRL Rescuer’s Record newsletter including “Ten ways to cope with the loss of your pet” (May/Jun 2007); “Growl Appreciation” (Mar/Apr 2008); also wrote an article in Feb 2008 For the Love of Danes newsletter “The Dawg House” on senior Dane adoption.

Supported local MAGDRL activities including 2007 Meet & Greets, annual Maryland fundraiser yard sale, and Orioles baseball “Bark in the Park.”

Supported other chapter’s activities including NoVA’s “Reston Pet Fiesta”, “PA/DE DogFest,” helped design the new PA/MAGDRL web page graphic, and contributed to PA/DE’s e-fencing page.

Continued to issue “Dog Owner Education” topics and email updates to educate members about canine health, welfare and behavior. Important topics this term include:
- Shared learning from seminars presented by nationally known canine behaviorists including Suzanne Clotheir, Sue Sternberg, and from viewing “The Language of Dogs” DVD by Sarah Kalnajs
- Behavior topics included “The value of Wait” with instructions on teaching it by Pat Miller; “Growl Appreciation;” “Successful Multi-dog Households;” and “The impact of Dominance-based training.”
- Rescue topics included the controversy over early spay/neutering; shared eye-opening statistics about 67% of rescue/shelter dogs coming from BYBs; myths about hoarding by animal rescues; changes in military base dog rules; canine temperament tests; new Maine/New Hampshire Great Dane rescues; and cautions about “Beware of Dog” signage.
- Health and welfare topics included “Summer Outdoor Tips for Dogs;” “Blue-Green Algae Warning;” Aggression & Omega-3 Deficiency; warnings about vaccinating sick dogs and the truth about Rabies vaccine; cautions about the difference in aftercare provided by various veterinary emergency hospitals; health benefits of raising kids with pets; what’s really in your dog’s kibble; how “Blue Kongs” may save your dog’s life; and “Heartworm Q&A .“
- General articles included “Pet Ministries;” “Canine Oral Health;” “Atopy in Dogs;” and “A Guide to Dog Symptoms.”
- Fun online activities included an online “Laughing Dane” contest” in July 2007 (http://www.lissa.net/Joya/MAGDRL_Laughing_Dane_contest.htm and a “Valentine Kissing Dane” poll (and 95.35% of us kiss our Danes!)

2005 Accomplishments
- Volunteered at eastern Maryland Meet & Greets and serve as Co-coordinator for this area. Attended 46 MAGDRL events with/without dogs in 2005/6.
- Served as volunteer photographer at a Maryland Santa Claws fundraiser at PetSmart every Sat/Sun in December. Volunteered at other special events including TV appearances, adoption days events, PetExpos, etc.
- Ongoing duties as Team Leader, applicant screens for MD/DC. Returned 1400+ applicant phone calls in 2005/6; responded to 500+ email inquiries.
- Other MAGDRL activities include applicant letter writing and taking minutes at meetings; documenting Team Leader processes, Also transports, housechecks, and dog evaluations.
- Coordinated MAGDRL 2005 Dog Owner’s Education Brunch featuring Pat Miller which was a fundraising success. Shared materials with other areas to support their Brunches.
- Contributor to MAGDRL Rescuer’s Record newsletter.
- This year, developed 8 new brochures on cost of ownership, finding a responsible breeder, introducing a Danes to cats, introducing Danes to babies, Preventing dog bites, Living with a Dane, MAGDRL Great Dane adoption procedure, and senior Dane brochures. Submitted all 15 current brochures to US Copyright Office for registration as MAGDRL official publications.

- Conceived of the first Danes of Summer MAGDRL card photo contest in 2005. Established photo release policy, coordinated submission of photos, set up voting, coordinated printing for cards sold as a fundraiser.
- Set up vehicle donation capability with DonationLine as a fundraiser. Continue to pursue submitting MAGDRL as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit for United Way and Combined Federal Campaign donations. Supported other MAGDRL fundraisers, raffles, auctions, MAGDRL dog walks, Café Press, and Dane Depot. Became a “Friend of MAGDRL for Life.”
- Developed “Dog Owner Education” e-news emails. To-date, developed and distributed a total of 27 educational emails to over 500 members on the extended MAGDRL list. Several DOE Topics were also used in state MAGDRL newsletters.
- Completed the AKC exam and was approved as a CGC tester for 2005/6. I use these skills for fundraising at MAGDRL events.
