  • Abigail
    Additional Photos
Abigail is looking for a foster home. Can you help?
Abigail is a 1 1/2 year old merle female with natural ears who came to us when her owner could no longer afford to feed her. In her past home she lived with another female Dane and a smaller mixed breed who was also female. Abbie is as rough around the edges as they come but they don't get much sweeter than her. She is trying hard to learn some manners and to learn how to walk like a lady on a leash. So far, here at the kennel she has not played well with either sex of dog but we are hoping that it is just an adjustment for her. Today she walked very well with a medium sized dog and after the long walk did engage in some play but she was very dominant. Abigail is starved for affection and she will jump up on humans in order to demand that attention. She is learning that this is not the way to do it. She has not lived with children in the past but is reported to be good with them. We have four children all of who interact with her and she does well. We would suggest no young children because of the jumping issue. She shows no fearfulness over men. She loves anyone who she thinks will love her back. She was recently spayed, brought up to date on her shots and is heartworm negative. She is working on gaining some weight but will remain a small to medium size Dane, probably hovering around 100 pounds at ideal weight. Abigail came to MAGDRL in February 2008. (6)
Update 8/8/08 -Abigail has just moved into her foster home. She's afraid and isn't sure what to make of the long drive and her new surroundings. She has been very sweet and loving with her foster mom and dad. Abigail has not yet met her foster brothers and sister, other than through the crate. She was interested and a little nervous, but pretty calm considering all the changes over the past 24 hours. Her foster family will continue with updates on her progress.
Update 8/17/08 - Abigail has met all her foster siblings. She did very well with the introductions and was very respectful. Abbie listens very well and wants desperately to please. She spent the evening with everyone and wanted very much to be part of the group. She loves attention and snuggles and settles very nicely in the house. Abigail will make a wonderful addition to any family with medium to large dogs and kids that are a little older.
Update 8/23/08 - Abigail is fully integrated into the household and she’s amazing. She’s very intelligent and listens better than her foster siblings. She loves to snuggle with everything, whether it has two legs or four. Her foster family is going to start getting her out and exposing her to the excitement of the outside world. I’m sure she’ll adjust and take to it like a champ, the way she’s taken to everything else we’ve thrown her way.
Update 10/30/08 - Abigail has done great moving into a home environment. She does great with the other dogs, is very loving, and overall is a good listener. She met a new foster brother and did great with him immediately. Abigail is ready for a home to call her own.
  • Alexander
    Additional Photos
Alexander is a 2-3 year old black male with cropped and standing ears. He was picked up as a stray. Alexander is very thin and has a sore on his back leg. Until he has gained some weight, he will not be neutered. Alexander seems to get along with other dogs through the kennel fence where he is staying right now. He did go after the vet's cat so he will not be placed with cats. Alexander has nothing but leans and kisses for everyone that has met him since coming into rescue. He walks well on a leash. We will update you more as we learn more about him, right now we know he is a sweet boy that loves to lean on you for rubs. Alexander came to MAGDRL in March 2008. (9)
Updated 5/3/08 - Alexander is heart worm positive and is going through heat worm treatment at this time. He will be neutered after his heart worm treatment has been completed.
Update 8/17/08 - Alexander has completed his heart worm treatments and has been neutered. He has also recently been moved into a foster home who will soon give us an update on Alexander's personality.
  • Amelia
Amelia is a 10 month old mantle female with natural ears. She is an adorable girl who came into rescue with 3 of her siblings when their breeder could not find homes for them. She is quite petite and will surely remain on the smaller side once fully grown. Don't let her size fool you though, she has a huge heart and is a complete sweetheart who loves to cuddle and nuzzle into you and give lots of kisses. Amelia will need to gain some much needed weight before we will be able to have her spayed. Once that is completed she will be available to go to her forever home. Amelia and her siblings were living outside in a pen for the first 9 months of her life with little contact and socialization. Because of this sheltered upbringing, Amelia is a little fearful and unsure of new things and situations. She is building her confidence more and more everyday with the love and support of her foster mom. With continued socialization she will continue to blossom as she is doing already. Amelia is being fostered with one of her siblings as well as 2 other Danes and is doing wonderfully. She is great with children of all ages and cats too! She plays nicely and interacts beautifully with all the dogs she has met and steals the hearts of every person she comes in contact with. She may do best in a home with a companion dog or a family member who is home more during the day, as she feels most secure when with company, but as her confidence grows this may not be needed. Amelia has learned sit and come and is continuing to work on her basic obedience. She is crate trained and house broken, walks well on a leash and loves car rides. She will easily scale a fence if given the opportunity and will require a home with a 6' fence to keep her safely contained. Amelia will also require a commitment of obedience training as a condition of her adoption. This will ensure her forever family has the knowledge and tools to properly socialize her as well as continuing with the training she is getting in her foster home. Amelia may seem a bit shy at first but quickly becomes comfortable with new people showing off that amazing personality she has. Amelia came to MAGDRL in July 2008. (3)
  • Annabelle
Annabelle is a 3 year old fawn female with natural ears. She came to rescue after her owners surrendered her to a shelter because she was fighting with another female dog in the home. Her foster family has determined that she is a "Velcro" Dane full of love and leans. She loves to be near members of her family and follows her owners wherever they go… to the point where she can’t decide where to go when the family members are in separate rooms. She is house trained and well behaved when left alone. Annabelle lives with 3 cats and 5 horses and does fine with all. While Annabelle was surrendered to a shelter because she was fighting with another female dog in the home, the shelter saw no evidence of her not getting along with other dogs - she was even kenneled next to another dog that doesn't care for other dogs and she never reacted to her. We believe the other dog in the home was instigating the fights, but to be sure she needs to go to a home with no other female dogs. Annabelle has lived with small children but we are unsure how she reacts to them, so at this point, she is unknown with children. She has been recently spayed and is up to date on her vaccinations. Annabelle came to MAGDRL in July 2008. (4)
Update 8/22/08 - Annabelle has settled into her foster home very nicely. She is very happy to live with cats, horses and people. At this time she lives with one indoor kitten and 3 indoor/outdoor cats. Unfortunately we have found that Annabelle does not do well with other dogs. She may be fine with a submissive male. She has not been tested around small children but is fine with teenagers. She likes attention from adults. When her foster mother pays attention to the cats, Annabelle likes to be in the middle of the action. She likes walks and is fine when left alone for periods of time. Annabelle has a very sweet personality and is a wonderful companion.
  • Annie
Annie is an approximately 10 year old fawn female with cropped ears. She is a sweet girl that was found wandering along a very busy road that run parallel to an interstate. Due to cataracts in both eyes, she has only about 20% of her vision so it's a miracle that she wasn't hit. Other than her eyesight, Annie (named for "Little Orphan Annie") seems to be in fairly good health. She's a bit thin, but has a happy bounce in her step. Annie has a tumor on her ear that we've sent out to be tested, and her senior blood panel came back pretty good. She has tested as slight heart worm positive and will be put on prevention. Annie is living with a Dane and a medium sized mix and has done well with both. Her foster parents have taken her walking in downtown Colonial Williamsburg and she loves everyone she has met, and everyone adores her. Annie came to MAGDRL in August 2008. (6)
Update 9/30/08 - Due to Annie's vision problems, we would like to see her placed with another dog.
  • Austin
    Additional Photos
Austin is a sweet 9-10 yr old merle female with natural ears. She was originally adopted out back in 2004 to a family who has sadly suffered at the hands of the economy and can no longer afford to care for her. So, Austin has found her way back into rescue. Austin thrives on structure and routine and is completely trustworthy within the home and respects baby gates. She loves to be petted and spoiled and adores her people! She is wonderful with males and small dogs but has been getting into trouble with the other female Dane in her last foster home, so she would do best as the only female in the house. She has interacted with lots of children without issue but due to her age and her arthritis, she would do best in a quiet home without little ones who may fall on her. She is good with cats. Austin is a loving and sweet girl who so deserves to find her happily ever after. Austin came to MAGDRL in June 2008. (3) - Updated 11/7/08
  • Babe
    Additional Photos
Babe is a 3 year old fawn female with natural ears. Babe come to us from a shelter where she was dumped by her owners who said they had no time for her. She came in current on her shots, but she does have worms, which may account for her skinny frame. Babe is currently very scared, but is coming around slowly. She seems to get along very well with other dogs and had a grand time running around a play yard getting some much needed exercise. She has a lump on one of her paws which will be checked out by the vet. Babe came to MAGDRL in March 2006. (2)
Update 5/9/06 - The lump on Babe's foot has been totally removed and is healing well. We are pleased to report that the lump was not cancerous and she is as right as rain now. Babe is doing very well in her foster home, getting along just fine with the male Dane there. She has also mastered come, stay and sit and is beginning to learn other commands as well.
Update 5/31/06 - Babe is good buddies with my male dane although she has nipped him a few times. It took her a long time to get along well with my Dane and she is aggressive towards other dogs she has met. I think she would do better as an only dog or with a very low key dog. Babe is house and crate trained and does well in the house when left alone for a couple of hours. We learned this weekend that she has a huge fear of men when she does not know them. She cowers, runs away from them and hides in a corner and will urinate on the floor. We don't know her history but this isn't the first male that scared her so I am guessing she was abused. She is a very loving dog who loves attention, toys, and playing outside, and will make a great companion.
Update 8/31/07 - We celebrated our one year anniversary with Babe on April 3rd. Babe is a nice dog but she picks and chooses those she likes. She doesn't get along with most other dogs. She would probably do best as the only dog in the family. However, she is close to the other Dane in her foster home. Babe is leery of all strangers, especially men. She takes a long time to warm up to people and is very suspicious of people that enter our home or that we encounter on our walks. Quick movements scare her and anything that seems out of the ordinary to her rattles her. She has never been aggressive towards children but due to her unpredictable nature I would recommend she go to a home with older children or none at all. Babe has been diagnosed with allergies and has been receiving allergy shots. Babe is a silly, sweet dane when she is around those she is comfortable with. She is also the most "talkative" dog I know. She makes the funniest grunts and moans when she wants something, when you talk to her or while she is dreaming. Her goofy faces and noises always keep us laughing. Babe is also a Velcro dane to some extent. She generally follows me around everywhere although she is perfectly comfortable lounging with my Dane around the house.
Update 4/25/08 - Just when I thought we had Babe's allergy/skin issues under control her symptoms returned again. Sometime around November/December she started itching, scratching and gnawing at her tail, ears, legs, hind quarters... ok she was itchy all over! A few weeks of steroids and antibiotics, along with her regular allergy injections and antihistamines seemed to do the trick. Unfortunately a few weeks after that the symptoms came back. Another trip to the vet, some med changes and more steroids. At this point she was requiring weekly allergy injections. I kept in touch with her vet on a weekly basis by phone and we adjusted her treatment as needed to try to control her symptoms. The only treatment that seemed to control her symptoms was high dose steroids. While on the steroids Babe was irritable, had an insatiable appetite and thirst as well as incontinence issues. She wasn't itching but she was still miserable. We switched her to a lower strength steroid and a different antihistamine. Her allergy shots were stopped temporarily to verify they weren't the source of her increased allergy symptoms. They did not turn out to be an increased source of agitation for her so they have been gradually reintroduced into her system. For a little while she seemed to be doing better. By mid March she was again getting worse and back to the vet we went. This time they suggested a two week trial of Atopica (a very expensive allergy medication). On the trial Babe had decreased appetite and her skin turned from pink to black. We are not continuing the Atopica treatment at this time. Babe is now scheduled to see an allergy specialist this week. At the end of January Babe was introduced to my new foster puppy. Babe was terrified of him and acted out aggressively towards him when she felt threatened (which was basically anytime he was within 10ft of her). She does not warm up to people or animals easily. She is very skittish and afraid of anything new in her environment. After two very long months trying to integrate the new puppy into our household we succeeded. I am happy to report that not only does Babe tolerate the puppy, she actually engages him in play and tries to act like his mother! We are so proud of her. She is still toy aggressive when she is laying down with her toys and will growl at dogs (but not people) if they get too close when she is eating. Overall, Babe is a very sweet dog when you get to know her. She is very loyal, obedient and loving. Babe does better when there is another dog around but she requires a lot of careful interaction in order for her to feel comfortable around a new addition. If you are willing to give her the time she needs to get to know you and your family, she will not disappoint you. With a little structure and a lot of time and patience she would be a great family dog. Currently her allergy medications and supplements range in cost from $200-$300 a month.
Update 8/15/08 - Babe was recently diagnosed with a low thyroid, which may account for her skin allergies and hair loss. Thyroid problems have also been linked with aggression, so we're waiting to see if her dislike of strangers eases up. She will be starting on thyroid meds (meds cost about $30 for a 2-3 month supply). She's also being treated holistically for her allergies and they seem to be improving. Her foster mom is fixing a homemade diet for her that seems to agree with her. Babe will also be seeing a behaviorist for temperament testing and behavior modification program, so we're hoping that this little girl's personality will start to shine through her fears. Stay tuned for progress reports.
  • Baby Huey
    Additional Photos
Baby Huey is a Rescue In Need.
Baby Huey is an approximately 4 year old mantle male with natural ears. Huey came into rescue in terrible shape: he could barely walk at all and had bald patches all over. He was surrendered at the vet office, where he went straight in for an appointment. It seems that Huey has Wobbler's syndrome, a condition where the vertebrae in the neck narrow and compress the spinal chord. He has a bacterial infection in ears and skin, which is being treated with antibiotics. Once the skin infection is clear, he will have gold bead implants to help with wobblers. He was also put on a natural diet to help with allergies and skin infection. Meanwhile, Huey is an adorable addition to his foster home. He is sweet as pie, eager to be where the action is, and a big snuggler. He actually hates the camera and will turn away and hide when he sees it--sometimes will not reenter the room for 30 minutes or so until he's sure the coast is clear. He is fascinated by his new foster sister and follows her around doggedly, trying to get her to play, snuggle with him, etc. He is adorably pesky about it. Huey has lived with 6 children and is excellent with kids and even toddlers. He has not lived with another dog until now but is doing well and enjoys it. He will be tested with cats soon after we get his medical needs under control. Huey came in to MAGDRL in May 2008. (5)
Update 6/6/08 - Huey has been with us for 2 weeks now. We're having a difficult time clearing up his skin infection and that needs to happen before he can get his gold beads. He is a silly, very affectionate, jealous boy who is a joy to live with! Huey doesn't let his wobbler's interfere with his need to be in the thick of everything. If his foster sister is getting some love, he barrels over and pushes her out of the way or tries to engage her in play to distract her for the main goal: People! We're working on this, since it is quite rude and other dogs might not take it as calmly as his foster sister. Huey does well on carpets and grass, but can't cope at all on tile or hardwood. The foster has runners throughout the downstairs to help him cope. Huey did very well with a small gathering of people at the house, and solicited each person for affection and pets. He also attended the Doberman rescue picnic, where he was a big hit with everyone. It also gave us an opportunity to talk about wobbler's with another group whose breed is prone to it. He was happily exhausted when we came home after several hours at the picnic.
Update 7/2/08 - Huey had his gold bead surgery at the end of June and his skin infection finally looks to be clearing up nicely. He continues to be a sweet boy to live with, and is always ready for a snuggle and some kissies. He's quite the character - Huey only wants a toy that someone else is interested in and likes to play furiously with it until he figures out that you've moved on to something else. He's learned to half-sit on the couch and likes to block foster sister Mitsy in by sitting right there in front of her. He loves to be right in the middle of all of the action and is quite the house guarder, barking at whoever passes by if allowed on the front porch. Huey attended his first event a few weeks ago at a dog walk and was friendly and happy to meet people of all ages. He also did very well with dogs of all sizes, although I suspect he might have a hard time controlling his exuberance with small, running dogs. He will be cat tested soon.
Update 8/15/08 - Well, it's been 6 weeks since Huey's gold bead surgery, and his foster mom is very surprised to say that there has been no improvement. Huey continues to need to be helped down the 3 stairs to the back yard and sometimes up them. He's still wobbly when he walks and can't pivot easily (he'll just sink into a down without realizing it). He had a chiropractic adjustment and that weakened him somewhat for a few days but he's back to his normal mobility now. Despite all of that, he's game to get around and be with you no matter what. He's a total chow hound and somehow pulled a box of pizza off the recesses of the counter and ate 4 pieces the other day! If he could, Huey would be the little troublemaker he was born to be! He's sweet as pie and loves to snuggle close for hours. He would like nothing more than to be the star of the show. He would do much better in a ranch-style home with carpets, where he could maneuver better than he's able here in my narrow house with lots of stairs. Any adopter would be lucky to have this adorable, silly addition to their life!
Update 8/27/08 - Huey went for a follow up vet visit last night and the vet did see improvement. His top line is straighter, his responses are much quicker when they knuckle his paw over, and he did rather well on the slippery tile floor. While he hasn't miraculously become 100 percent better, definite improvement was seen. It is still hard to tell in smaller spaces but it seems that slow progress is being made. He also started on a natural anti-inflammatory and that seems to be helping quite a bit. Going up stairs, I'm only using the sling just in case he tries to double up on the stairs by mistake, and going down to gentle his landing. Yay!
Update 10/27/08 - In September, Huey was in top shape. He was getting around very well and was walking up the 3 steps to the house by himself. He was pivoting well and was in all-around good shape. This continued until the cold really set in, about 1st week in October. At that point, he started to backslide, enough that I worried that there were other complications. An x-ray of his back left joint shows good solid bone, and ACL seems to be in place. However, he does have some arthritis and the vet speculates that this is bothering him with the change in weather. His mobility may go in cycles, where sometimes he does very well and other times is not as mobile. The vet advised to cut out all exercise and leash walk only during times of low mobility, plus avoid steps altogether. He should be moving to a home where he can avoid steps in the next few weeks or so. Meanwhile, the Tootsie Roll Bandit strikes at least weekly - Huey loves tootsie roll pops (and so does his foster mom!)! He'll steal a pop, unwrap it, eat it, and leave the stick and wrapper as discarded evidence on the floor! He's mostly enjoying his new foster sister, Ellie, but does get jealous of attention. Any family would be lucky to have such a silly character sharing their life! He is a constant source of amusement, and always makes me laugh. He's silly and stubborn and cute and determined. His disability doesn't stand in his way - don't let it stand in your way, either.
  • Belle
Belle is approximately 3 year old black female with natural ears. She is a true lover, loves all humans and gets along great with her foster families 5 other dogs of all sizes. Belle is heartworm positive and also needs to be spayed. She is house trained and lets you know when she needs to go out. Belle is on the small side weighing in at 85 lbs, but getting heavier as she came in on the skinny side. Belle would make a great companion for anyone a true love bug, just wants to please. Belle came to MAGDRL in August 2007. (9)
Update 1/8/08 - Belle is a big, friendly, goofy girl with a stubborn streak and a sense of humor. This girl can lean with the best of them and is hungry for love and affection. She loves treats and was trained quickly to sit and raise a paw this way. Belle is smart and will respond to love and affection and just about any treat. She currently lives with four other dogs - one is an older alpha male. She has some problems with food aggression, since she was found severely underweight, but this issue is being resolved. Belle is a beautiful, black 130 lb. girl, slightly overweight, with beautiful, soulful eyes that will touch your soul. We believe she is about three years old and has no issues with small and other female dogs. She is heart worm positive and is being treated for this, and she has been spayed. She is currently kenneled at night without problems.
Update 10/30/08 - Belle’s foster mom reports that Belle continues to be a very easy going, loving dog that just can’t get enough pets, scratches, and leans. She’ll stand for hours for any and all attention and is a very delightful dog to have around. She has lost some weight now, but still loves her food and cookies and is always the first one in line for them. She’s a young, playful girl and loves playing with her 5 fur brother and sisters (including a Chihuahua-mix and a greyhound). She didn’t pay attention to the cats that have been at the house and loves the children that visit. Belle has completed her heart worm treatment and is all ready to go to her forever home – she’s just waiting for you to inquire about her!
  • Bentley
Bentley is an approximately 2-3 year old black male with cropped, but flopping, ears. He is a tall boy is a tall, very sweet boy that takes a couple of minutes to warm up to you. But once he knows you are okay, he makes a great companion. Bentley regularly got away from his family and was picked up numerous times by animal control. His family decided that it was too expensive to keep picking him up so he made his way to rescue. When Bentley arrived at his foster home he was quite social and very eager to please. He takes treats very gently and is a fast learner. Bentley learned "sit" very quickly and is happy to perform for treats. He walks nicely on a leash and has been good with female dogs, children, men, women and babies. He does jump 4 foot fences to join the family but he has never attempted to jump the exact same height fence to get in the street or driveway or to get away. When he jumps a fence he's like a beautiful race horse... lovely to see but he will need a 6 foot fence. Bentley is active and runs around with the other boarding and foster dogs at his current foster home. Bentley is a vocal dog and will talk to other new dogs. That can be intimidating to some dogs, but he really wants to play and has been very good with the other dogs that he has met. Bentley can be a little grumbly with male dogs so we think he will be better in a family where he is the only male. He thinks he should be the king so he doesn’t want to share his home with another male. Bentley has gotten along well with chickens, goats, a pony and pet emu. He is very smart and eager to do whatever his new human wants but they need to help him understand what that is exactly. He will counter surf for the right food but his foster home has been working on this. Bentley rarely barks and sleeps on the floor on a blanket happily. He has not tried to get onto beds or couches at all but we are sure that with a little encouragement, he would happily join you for a nap in front of the TV. Bentley came to MAGDRL in November 2008. (9)
  • Bob
Bob is looking for a foster home. Can you help?
Bob is a 5 1/2 year old black male with cropped and standing ears. He came into rescue cause his family cant afford to care for him anymore. He lived with an 8 month old female Dane and was great with her. He was very protective of her as any older brother would be. Bob would be great as an only dog but would be OK with a submissive female. He is good with cats and has been around young children and did fine. He can be a little fearful of some men (he did fine with the male and female evaluators), so he needs to go to a quiet home that will focus on positive training and give him the space he needs to adjust. Bob is a little rough around the edges and is not for the first time dane owner. He will be required to attend obedience training to build his confidence and to learn some needed manners. Bob came to MAGDRL in September 2008. (5)
Update 10/25/08 - Bob is much more mellow now that he has been neutered. He did very well on leash with a head halti and very much enjoyed the short walk he went on. He did great meeting a female Dane and walked well with her while they were on leash. Bob did good inside with the female Dane. He did growl a little when he had to share the humans. He responded well to a strong NO and became almost submissive. Bob would do fine with an older female Dane.
  • Brandi
    Additional Photos
Brandi is an approximately 2 year old fawn female with natural ears. She came to rescue back in June, along with her sister Kahlua, and were placed together in a family. Unfortunately due to changes in work hours, Brandi has come back to rescue. Though Brandi and Kahlua have been together their entire life, we feel that as long as the family each one goes to has another dog, they can be separated. If they both are adopted by the same family, they would be best off without any other dogs in the home. Brandi is very loving with her people, and loves to snuggle with them. She walks well on a leash and enjoys car rides. Brandi is fine with children, but we do not know how she is with cats. She is the more dominant of the pair. Brandi came to MAGDRL in July 2008. (2)
Update 10/4/08 -Brandi and her sister were separated, as Brandi tended to bully Kahlua. She's now in a foster home with several other danes and is having a great time with the family's 2 yr old female dane! She is living with cats but seems a bit too interested in them and will chase, so we think no cats. She is not housetrained and the foster home has started to work to fix this. She will not go home with a family until she is more reliable in the house.
Update 10/9/08 - Come one come all to the most beautiful fawn dane in the world. She's lean, long ,and she gets along with just about everything. She has a very playful personality. If given a choice between walking, sleeping, eating or playing she would pick play hands down. She lopes, she runs, she hops and yes she even digs just a bit. She enjoys a quick game of fetch and when she settles down she likes to crawl into your lap and get hugs and belly rubs. She has a very healthy appetite although she is a bit to lean for me. I would love to see about ten more pounds on her but with her playing all the time it is hard to get her to where she should be on the scale. She enjoys nap time in her crate and she is wonderful at night when she sleeps with her foster family. She is crated during the day when no one is home because of her love for playing. She is still in a bit of a chewing stage so you have to keep you shoes hidden. I expect her to soon grow out of this, She is currently living with four other large dogs and four cats. She also enjoys watching birds in their cage. She likes to play with the cats but I will not allow her to go to a home with cats if the cats cannot put her in her place. The cats must be willing to stand their own ground and tell her that they mean business when they say "no". She only has one bad habit which we are working hard to change. She gets so excited to play outside she sometimes forgets to do her business outside. This usually happens first thing in the morning or after she has been in the crate for a long time while we are at work. Her foster family is waiting until she does her business outside then she gets a "Good girl and a treat" she is responding better to this and no accidents for a couple of days now.
  • Caesar #2
    Additional Photos
Caesar is a Rescue In Need.
Caesar is a 4 1/2 year old (DOB 8/24/03) mantle marked merle with cropped and standing ears. He is a very big boy, at 36"-37" at the shoulder and almost 180 lbs. He came to rescue because his family had a baby who is now 18 months old and they were afraid he would knock him over. Caesar is a very sweet boy, just loves attention and pets of any kind, and will even walk up to you and put his head in your chest for a hug. He rides great in a car and really loves his car rides. His back end droops some when standing still for too long, and he will be evaluated by a Neurologist to rule out possible Wobbler's. Caesar is still very playful, and loves a good game of tug a war, and will release the toy on command. He does know some basic commands and walks great on a leash. He is currently living with 2 children ages 10 and 2 and does wonderfully with them. He has not knocked the toddler over and side steps him quite nicely. He is also living with another female Dane and 2 cats. He has never encountered cats before and is quite comical when one comes around. He completely freezes and won't move. He figures if he doesn't move the cat won't see him. Caesar is a big love bug, who wants nothing more than to cuddle up with you and have you pet him forever. Because of his size, he should go to a home with older children, as not all children are as Dane savvy and might take offense to any "hip checks" that might happen. Caesar came to MADRL in May 2008. (5)
Update 7/12/08 - Caesar was moved out of the foster home with the small kids because when his back end hurts, he didn’t appreciate them all over him. So we have decided to not allow him to go to a home with children younger than 12. We have also found out that he can’t do stairs. So he will need to find a home with no stairs or only a few to go in and out. He is doing really good in his new foster home. He is living with a Ridgeback and 2 cats and has done well with the many dogs they have watch for other people. He is very interested in one of their cats. The cat grew up with a Dane so she is comfortable with large dogs and seems to like Caesar - until he pokes a bit too forcefully with that giant muzzle. Then it's a hiss and a smack, Caesar backs off and she goes on about her business. A match made in heaven. Caesar had diarrhea and hookworms, but that is cleared up now. Even with everything that's going on with him, his foster says he is so sweet and playful. The more settled in he is there, the more his personality comes out and he's can be quite a goof as well. They are really enjoying having him in their home. He had a seizure and that has worried us, so he saw a neurologist, but has not had another one. So we aren’t sure what caused it, but are keeping an eye out in case he has another one. He is getting x-rays to see if we can find out more about his hind end problems. We are also going to add acupuncture to his treatment to see if he will respond to that. He did have one treatment and the foster felt like he was doing better afterwards. Caesar continues to be a sweet boy and hopefully we can find out more soon to help him.
Update 8/4/08 - Caesar has had three acupuncture treatments and has been on a Chinese herbal medication for a few days. We are also doing some physical therapy at home to strengthen his rear end and encourage him to pick up his hind feet. He seems to be a good candidate for Gold Bead Implants which is being investigated further. We see definite improvement in several ways, he lifts up his head more often, stands longer before his rear sinks down, and does a full body doggie shake head to tail. Until last week I'd not seen him do a full shake. He's also more energetic and assertive - translate as testing limits. He is discovering a whole new world at counter height. His biggest score so far is a pound cake. Foster Mom caught him muzzle deep in crumbs and used it as a learning opportunity. Smart boy that he is, he figured the trash can must be fair game - Mom and Dad didn't even want that stuff anymore. That has required a bit more creativity on Mom's part to convince him otherwise, but we're getting there. More than anything Caesar wants to please and being the typical sensitive dane it doesn't take much to let him know you're unhappy with him. He's catching on to the boundaries pretty quick. Part of his physical therapy involves lots of sitting and standing repeats so he's buffing up on basic obedience as well. To keep him busy and entertained during down time a kong with treats will last an hour or so. He is definitely a dog that needs a structured environment. Left to his own devices, he could get into mischief. Caesar doesn't like wood or tile floors and can't do stairs - he will not do more than four or five steps. He has not been to the basement or the second floor since he arrived at his foster home. We have also discovered that he doesn't like elevators either - unfortunate combination. He will need to go to a home that can accommodate these issues. While he and Squeaky the cat are great friends, Rocky the other cat in the house isn't too sure. Caesar tries to interact with her like he does Squeak, but she's having none of it. Caesar will do fine in a home with a confident cat, but not the timid sort.
Update 10/16/08 - Caesar's condition is improving on a daily basis since the Gold Bead Implants (Sept. 24th) and he has even started taking the stairs to the second floor. He's comes down on his own just fine as well. He just decided he wanted to be with us and came on up. He won't go down to the basement those stairs are just too scary. At the dog park he chases squirrels and plays with the other dogs - not rough at all, mostly they jump at him and he knocks them down with his huge paw. Caesar has to be transported in a low vehicle, like a mini-van or an Element. He can’t get up in an SUV, it’s just too hard for him. He is much more active than before and will need 30-45 minutes of walking or time at the dog park daily to keep him calm and happy. Most important is that he stays trim; he is at 143 lbs (not 180 lbs like the website says). Every vet who has seen him says he should stay at that weight. He is on Zyflamend which is an herbal anti-inflammatory that seemed to make a big difference for him. He is also on a Chinese cervical formula herbal powder prescribed by the vet who was giving him his acupuncture treatments. The Zyflamend is available online and cost roughly one dollar a day. The herbal powder is by prescription and cost approximately $1.25 a day. It may be available at a better price by ordering a larger container. We have him on grain-free because he was having stomach upsets. This has helped somewhat and the vet said to add probiotics which we will start this week.
  • Carley
    Additional Photos
Carley is a 4 year old black female with natural ears. She came to rescue because she has been fearful around kids in the past, and they have a new baby. Carley is a little shy with new people; however, we are working on that each day as her foster family has a lot of people who visit. She has attached herself to her foster Dad - she follows him everywhere. Carley is living with 2 Danes and is doing great with them. She is also living with 3 cats and is fine with them as well. Carley did exhibit separation anxiety in her original home. Since being moved to her foster family, she has not shown any signs of separation anxiety, and we believe it's because she is always in the company of at least one other dog. So, we believe that Carley will do best in a home that has another dog to keep her company. Carley has growled at a 6 year old in her past. Because of this, she will not be placed in a home with children under the age of 12. She has been fine with the children that she has seen in the neighborhood. Carley does not get on furniture and has been very happily sleeping on a comforter on the floor. Carley came to MAGDRL in September 2008. (4)
Update 9/26/08 - Another week has gone by and Carley is a different dog. She is much more self assured, happier and much more animated. Her personality has come all the way out. She is a comedian and we laugh at her all the time. She loves to play with Otto (a male Dane in her foster home), even though he is much bigger than she is and he is not exactly gentle, but they have fun. I have not seen her tail between her legs for about 8 days, she has the cutest tail that curls up and has a little white tip that looks like a paint brush. Our nephew, who is 5, visited and she was very good - could not have been bothered by him at all. She continues to do well when left home with the other dogs.
Update 10/26/08 - Carley has been making the rounds at several local events where she has been loved by all. She spent her time today wearing a green boa and being loved by kids, adults, and other dogs of all ages. She is a real sweet girl who is just looking for a happy home with another dog to spend her days relaxing in.
  • Clark
    Additional Photos
Clark is a 13 week old white deaf male with natural ears. Clark also has some visual impairment. Clark was turned over to rescue when he was about 6 weeks old with his deaf brothers. Clark is our ball of energy. He lives ever single moment with zest! He likes to play hard with his brothers or whoever is around and size makes no difference to him. He brings laughter to all who meet him. Along with being deaf, Clark has some eye abnormalities. His blue eyes are subluxated, which simply means off of center. The Iris also has some abnormalities however Clark can see. We have no question both Clark and Stanley can see things around them. They will chase a ball, follow a fly, and watch us through a sliding glass door. Clark loves to chase the kids outside. Clark has no problem chasing them as long as they stay within about 6 feet. It becomes very obvious when he has lost sight of the kids because he will stop running and try to figure out where they are. The kids will then run back by him so he can figure out the direction and off he will run. Clark is already crate trained and is working on his day time house training. His foster family has begun trying to train him to use a bell attached to the door to indicate he wants to go outside and potty. Clark also has begun working on his obedience using sign language. Clark currently lives with a family of six which includes four children. He also lives with 6 other dogs of all different sizes. He has been exposed to dogs as small as 5 pounds and dogs as large as 160 pounds. Clark needs a family who has a hearing dog and also there can be no fencing exceptions for Clark's adoptive family. Clark came to MAGDRL in September 2008. (9)
  • Daphne
    Additional Photos
Daphne is an energetic and loving 2 1/2 year old female harlequin dane. She loves nothing more than to run and play and it can be argued that she actually smiles when she sees the tennis ball signaling a future romp. Daphne also loves to play with dogs and gets along with everyone, big and small. After some play time, she curls up in a ball and snores the night away. She has had limited exposure to kids, but has proved excellent so far. She is currently living with a ten month old baby and has been gentle and extremely tolerant. Daphne adores people and is a bit of a shadow, always as close to her people as she can get. She is 120 pounds of lap dog and can find a way onto any lap at any time. Daphne is full of love and can be pretty excitable when she gets some love back. She does bark when the doorbell rings and is excited to greet the new people, but settles down quickly. Daphne is crate trained and does very well in cars. She is a beautiful dog and the pictures don't do her justice. Her family is heartbroken to lose this gem of a pup, but a baby and another on the way and cannot give Daphne the time that she deserves. Daphne did break a leg in February of 2008 and had surgery to repair the broken bone. She recovered excellently and fully. Daphne came to MAGDRL in November 2008. (2)
  • Dempsey
Dempsey is looking for a foster home. Can you help?
Dempsey is a 2 year old fawn female with cropped and standing ears. She is a petite female that has come to rescue because her family does not have the time for her as they would like to be able to travel more and are working on selling their home. Dempsey is good with other dogs and children. She has not been around cats, but her family suspects she would be interested, but afraid of them. Dempsey is an active girl, so she may be a bit much for a kid who’s not used to being around big dogs, but if she has an outlet for her energy (like another dog to play with) she should be fine with all kids. She will need some brush up on her obedience commands and her leash walking skills. Dempsey is a sweet girl who would fit into just about any home. Dempsey came to MAGDRL in September 2008. (4)
  • Diesel
Diesel is a 1 year old black male with natural ears. He came to rescue abandoned, emaciated, sad, and lonely. But watch out! He's now a happy rambunctious boy who loves life. This dog is now THE greatest of Great Danes. He has just passed his year birthday, which was celebrated with loves, kisses, crazy runs on the beach, and a hat he didn't want to wear. BD (Big Diesel) is loving, doesn't counter surf, doesn't beg, and is good with my female adult dane. He is not good with younger, or smaller in weight dogs, as he tends to topple them. BD doesn't know many commands, but is crate trained. He is very smart and will adjust to your schedule and your needs. But, he does need attention - he loves to be played with in the yard and then later to be rubbed. Because of BD's high energy, he will only be placed in a home with older children. He is still very much a puppy, so he will still chew when bored, and can be very hyper. He is crate trained, and is currently crated when his family leaves for work during the day. BD absolutely loves riding in the car. You can’t go near the car when he is with you without him waiting at the back hatch to jump in. He absolutely loves having his face out the window, and his ears blowing. Diesel come to MAGDRL in September 2008. (9) - Updated 11/2/08
  • Easabell
Easabell is looking for a foster home. Can you help?
Easabell is a 2 year old fawn female with natural ears. She came to rescue due to divorce. Easabell was living in a barn and her previous owner intended to breed her. She never had a litter, but of course came into heat the second day she was with us. This means we have to wait for her to get over her heat cycle before we can get her spayed and ready to move to a foster home. We don’t know if Easabell ever got to live inside a home, so we don’t have much info on how she would behave inside with a family. Her previous owner stated that she was housetrained, but not crate trained. She seems very sweet and is very smart. She definitely knows how to lift the locks on a kennel gate to let the other dogs in so she can play with them. She seems to be fine with males, but for some reason has a dislike for tan colored dogs. We do not know about cats, but will cat test her soon. She will only be placed with children over the age of 12. Easabell came to MAGDRL in April 2008. (1)
Update 6/1/08 - Easabell is now spayed and ready for her home. She is a sweet girl, but we think that she will be most happy as an only dog or go into a home that is dedicated enough to re-integrate her with other dogs. In one of her former homes she was muzzled and was allowed to be attacked by another female dane in the home. We know this is the reason for her disliking other dogs, especially large dogs.
  • Ellie
Ellie is a 3 year old merle female with natural ears. She just came into rescue and needs to be evaluated. Ellie was extremely frightened her first few days in her new foster home and it took her days to warm up to her foster mom. She spent days watching the windows for her family, and whined the whole time. She's starting to warm up but continues to be very skittish around the other foster dane. She walks very well on leash and loves her toys. She is crate trained. A full write-up will be available soon. Ellie came to MAGDRL in October 2008. (2)
Update 10/27/08 - Ellie Bells is a very nice girl who is quite upset by change and unsure of people she doesn't know. She will require some time in rescue to more fully understand her fears and to teach her to better adapt to changes. Ellie has come to trust her foster mom and, after more than a week of being unsure of foster brother Huey, has decided he's too pathetic to be concerned with. She now tries to play with him. Ellie is crate trained and has also had formal obedience training. She's fine in the house when she learns the routine, but takes days to adjust to new people and does not like strangers. She barks to make sure everyone goes away. In the house, she'll whine when she's unsure. She's also a talker... she wrooo-wroos at her foster mom when she's happy or excited. Ellie is housetrained and walks well on leash. She can be low energy and is happy to settle down and be in the room with her people. Because she doesn't like change, she would not do well in a busy household, but instead would flourish in a home where there is a defined routine and things are relatively quiet. She's a guarder - of her house, her people, her things. We're working to make sure this doesn't become an issue. Despite her worries, Ellie Bells is an easy dane to live with, and will make a good dane for the right home. She is not for first time dane owners and will require gentle redirecting.
  • Elmer
    Additional Photos
Elmer is an approximately 2-3 year old male harlequin with cropped ears. He was turned into rescue from a shelter. He is a handsome boy and such a lover. Elmer is in a foster home with 3 other Danes and does well with all them, both male and female. He is also fine with the cat in his foster home. He doesn't love his crate but will go in and settle down after very little complaining. His foster home is working on his commands and leash walking. He does not counter-surf, and he rides well in a car. He is a smart boy and learning quickly what is expected of him, he wants very much to please. We have no history of him with children so he will not be placed with young children, but has met a couple of 10 year old girls and fell in love with them. He will make some lucky family a wonderful addition. Elmer will be available for adoption after he is neutered. Elmer came to MAGDRL in October 2008. (3)
  • Elwood
    Additional Photos
Elwood is a 12 week old male Dane mix puppy who was born on 6/26/08. He and his 5 other littermates were born in rescue as their mother was brought to a shelter pregnant. MAGDRL pulled her into rescue and 2 weeks later, 6 beautiful baby boys were born. Elwood is currently in foster with one of his brothers and also lives with a male Dane, 2 Dane mixes and a cat. He is doing wonderfully and is just having a blast with so many dogs to play with. He is crate trained and almost 100% on his potty training. He is silly and goofy and very responsive to direction and training. He knows sit and his foster parents are working on down and come with him. Elwood will also require a commitment of puppy socialization classes as well as obedience training as a condition of his adoption. This will ensure his forever family has the knowledge and tools to properly socialize him as well as continuing on with the training he is getting in his foster home.Elwood is cute as a button and will make a wonderful addition to any family. A deposit will be collected at the time of adoption and will be returned when the rescue receives proof of neuter. Elwood was born into MAGDRL in June 2008. (10)
Update 10/27/08 - Elwood had surgery a week ago this past Friday to repair a very large umbilical hernia which measured over 4" long and just could not wait any longer to be repaired. While in recovery after surgery, Elwood went into distress and chest X-ray's were taken. What was discovered after reading the films was that Elwood has a Diaphragmatic Hernia. A diaphragmatic hernia is often caused by a birth defect in which there is an abnormal opening in the diaphragm, the muscle that helps you breathe. The opening allows part of the abdominal organs to move into the chest area. As a result, the abdominal organs such as the stomach, small intestine, spleen, part of the liver, and the kidney appear in the chest cavity with the heart and lungs. His vet has repaired several of these though they have never seen a dog present with one that was not in immediate distress. He was much like the freak in the room at our consult with the surgeons, as a happy, bouncy 16 week old puppy, with his intestines and possible organs in his chest cavity. Not like you could tell! Typically a dog would present with some type of distress due to the fact that intestines or other organs are cut off from blood supply or compressed, or immediate pressure being put upon the heart. Elwood does not have that issue at all yet, which is why they recommend doing the surgery as soon as possible. He is asymptomatic and has no signs of distress, heart damage or any other issue at the moment but in a short time, without the surgery to repair this, Elwood will eventually die... The cost of the surgery is $1,700.00 with our MAGDRL discounts and a personal "break" given by the Cardio Thoracic Surgeon who will perform the surgery and we are hoping to be able to raise these funds as soon as possible to pay for the procedure. Elwood is a happy healthy and insanely active young pup who should be 100% after this surgery.
Update 11/15/08 - Elwood has fully recovered from his surgery and has been given a clean bill of health. He is all puppy, full of life and energy! He is now 20 weeks old, has been neutered and is growing like a weed. He is crate trained and housebroken and is loving having the other 3 dogs in his foster home to keep him company and play with him. Elwood is good with cats and kids of all ages as well. Everyone who meets him just falls in love with his charismatic personality and zest for life. There is no bringing Elwood down... so why not let him bring some sunshine to your family and home... He is ready!
  • Enki
    Additional Photos
Approximately 7 year old black female with white markings and natural ears. Enki still has the activity level of a 2 or 3 year old. She's coming to rescue because if she's left outside for too long she is destructive. Enki is housebroken and crate trained. Her only inside vice is counter surfing. She does well with cats and rabbits and large dogs. Enki came to MAGDRL in February 2007. (5)
Update 2/20/08 - Enki is a very young 7 years old. Her favorite place at any time is the couch. She is trustworthy anywhere in the house. She is an excellent dog to take out, loves to ride in the care and is great around other dogs, cats and small animals. A real lover. Enki will counter surf if food is left out. She has a wonderful personality, good energy, and a love of comfort.
Update 6/16/08 - Enki is a girl looking for the full comforts that life can provide. Snoozing on the couch or laying on the kitchen floor, just hoping for a handout is what this dogs life is all about. Enki is doing great with her foster brother, a 3 year old male Dane, and when she has enough of his "in your face" ways, she manages to put him in his place as any wise senior would do. She prefers to be by your side, but over the last few weeks, has been comfortable enough with wondering off to a comfortable dog bed or her favorite spot on the couch. She does very well with the feline in her home and has shown no aggressiveness toward her. Enki will bark at anyone walking by outside of the home, however she will calm down when asked. She is currently on antibiotics to treat Lyme disease and is taking her medicine well when accompanied with a cheese wiz chaser. She may be a little arthritic as she sometimes hesitates when there are more than a few steps. Some joint tenderness may also be a symptom related to the Lyme disease which is being monitored with the antibiotics prescribed for the Lyme disease. Some success has been made on the food aggressiveness that has been displayed. Both dogs can now eat side by side (separate dishes) with few problems. The toy aggressiveness continues to be worked on. Enki has full access to the house and is often left unattended. She is completely house broken and outside of her counter surfing, is trustworthy. She can be considered crate trained as both she and her foster brother often retreat to their separate crates to get away from each other.
Update 6/22/08 - Enki behaved like an absolute doll at a rescue pool party held last month. She took all the activity and 15+ dogs all in stride. However, it was obvious that this girl prefers to be indoors, even in cooler temperatures her time outdoors is usually limited to a few moments before she approaches to come back inside. Even when her foster mom is outdoors with her, she is "waiting" for Mom to go back inside. Enki permitted her Foster Mom to clip a few toe nails. She has a habit of biting/chewing her front paws and nails, leaving the front nails frayed. Her foster home is looking to resolve the underlying reason. Her bark can scare and it may be best that she is not placed in a home with small children. Enki is a pushy girl and while she is not difficult to manage her person should maintain structure.
Update 7/7/08 - Enki had the opportunity of interacting with strangers visiting during the early part of July. The visitors included two adults (male and female), two 13-year old boys, and two Quaker parrots. She took everything in stride and seemed to love the limited chaos. One of the 13-year olds stayed for a whole week, including the Fourth of July. Enki does not like loud noises and handled the nearby firework noise by retreating to an upper stairs hallway. She felt secure in this location and was left to her retreat. During this visit, Enki and her foster brother had the first opportunity to walk together on leads. She did very well and enjoyed spotting squirrels and deer. She does extremely well on a gentle lead and the 13 year old boy was able to handle her. She was much calmer when following her foster brother rather than taking lead on the paths. Enki has completed her 30 day antibiotic treatment for Lyme disease. The toy aggressiveness has been all "talk" and is being directed to the foster brother, however it was slightly frightening to the 13 year old visitor when Enki’s growls were indirectly directed to him. He handled it well by removing himself from the area. However it would likely be best if Enki’s home did not include small children. Some of Enki’s favorite pastimes are: (1) Watching the door-to-door solicitors hurrying away from the house once they hear Enki bark. This is such a hoot! (2) The experience of a senior dog at play … if you wait in place the younger dog will come running back around, and the chase will continue. (3) Walking with Enki… Foster Mom can keep pace, making it feel like a team effort and not a chore. (4) Enki body hugs …. certainly not for the claustrophobic types!
  • Ferguson
    Additional Photos
Ferguson is a 2 year old black male with cropped but flopped ears. He came from an animal shelter where his owners turned him in. He gets along with male and female dogs, large and small. His cat test went very well, but we do not know how he is with children. Ferguson is a bit rough around the edges in the manners dept. An obedience course will work wonders for this boy, he is so excited to get rubs, love and attention from humans, he gets carried away. Someone with time to work with him on obedience can make a huge difference in a short time. He appears to be house trained and is in good health. Ferguson is a fence jumper, so a six foot fence is required. He does not load well in a vehicle at this point, doesn't seem to know what riding is all about. Once in the vehicle, he does very well. Ferguson came to MAGDRL in July 2008. (2)
Update 8/15/08 - Ferguson is safely in a foster home and is busting to get out and have some fun! He's a wild child with no manners and no sense of appropriate behavior. On the plus side, he's been great with the foster's teeny tiny dogs and her female dane. From the foster: Ferg decided to use Mimi (an Italian greyhound) as a head rest. It was adorable. He really is a sweet boy. I think as soon as he learns what is appropriate and what is not he will have no problems finding a home. I took Ferguson to Petsmart for his first obedience class (which turned out to be postponed) and he got a GREAT reaction from people, bad manners and all!
Update 10/6/08 - Things are going well with Ferguson. Now that he has learned what sitting is all about we have been getting some real training in. Ferg has gotten much better with not jumping up. He still paws at me quite a lot, but I prefer pawing to knocking me over. He will graduate from obedience class soon. He does very good down stays, but the sit stays leave a little to be desired... He will need a lot of work with coming when called. He is walking nicely on a leash when there is little to no distraction. He had a slight interaction with an overly aggressive dog who lunged at him, but he kept it to a vocal level and did not respond violently otherwise. Ferg is still mouthy right when I let him out of the dog bedroom. Other than that he doesn't really mouth much anymore. I have not been crating him for the last 2 weeks or so. Nothing has been destroyed. I think he just lays on the bed till the door opens again. He actually goes to the room by himself (or with very little guidance). I think he likes not being crated.
Update 10/15/08 - Ferguson graduated beginner obedience today! What a GOOD BOY!
  • Fiona
Fiona is a Rescue In Need.
Fiona is a 14 month old (DOB 3-1-2007) merle female with natural ears. She is a sweet girl that has had a tough time in life. She has a dislocated hip and pelvis and elbow fractures that have healed incorrectly. Fiona has had an initial consult with an orthopedic specialist and he believe she may need a total hip replacement. She is being fostered with a male and female dane, two minpins and cats. She gets along with them all. She is a true love bug and just loves any new people she meets, especially children. She is crate trained, housebroken and her foster home is working on her basic obedience commands. Fiona needs further diagnostic testing that will cost about $1200. Surgery cost could range $4000 to $6000. For all she has been through she is the sweetest dane. Fiona came to MAGDRL in April 2008. (6)
Update 11/14/08 - Fiona has settled into her foster home. She is a great girl! She loves to go for walks and bike rides. She is great with other dogs and loves to meet new people. She wants to please and loves to be around her foster family members. We love when she gets the zoomies. That’s when she is really excited and wants to race around the yard. She loves peanut butter in her Kong and treats. She carries a teddy bear in her mouth or a bone. I am proud to say with continued socialization and positive relationships, Fiona has worked through her fear of men. With all her happiness, Fiona lives in pain. Demonstrated by the limp she shows when she walks quickly or tries to run. Her hip socket has been damaged with resulting muscle atrophy and her elbow is larger on one side. This past week she had her final orthopedic surgery consultation. We are waiting to hear the results.
  • Freedom
Freedom is a Rescue In Need.
Freedom is an approximately 3-4 year merle female with natural ears. She was picked up as a stray and had a wire wrapped around her leg which cut her all the way to the bone and cut into all the ligament, it had basically killed her leg. The leg was no longer any good and it was removed last week. After her leg was removed she got right up and started walking like a champ, a little shaky at first but is doing wonderful. Freedom is a sweet girl that has been through a lot in her life. She will be spayed within the next couple of weeks - she is in heat now as soon as her heat cycle is over she will be spayed. Freedom loves people. Her foster home does not think she has had much attention paid to her in her life and she is loving all the attention right now. Freedom is not house trained. Her foster is working on this. She seems to be growly with the male dogs in her house but we think this may be because she is in heat, at the shelter they said she was great with everything and as soon as she went into heat that changed. Freedom does have some food aggressive issue so she will need to be feed separately from the other dogs in the home. Freedom is great with kids and loves the kids in her foster home. She is unknown with cats but will be tested soon. Freedom came to MAGDRL in October 2008. (9)
  • Gabby
Gabby is a 3 year old blue female with natural ears. She is coming to rescue because her owners do not have enough time for her. She was living with another female Dane that was already adopted. Gabby is a sweet girl, that is crate and house trained, has attended doggie daycare and is a love bug once she warms up. Initially she is a bit on the shy side meeting new people, but settles in quickly. We don’t know how she is with cats, but she definitely loves to run and play with other dogs. She had a blast with her sister running full speed in an indoor arena. She is good with children. We would like to see Gabby go to a home where someone is home most of the time as she loves being with people. Gabby came to MAGDRL in November 2008. (1)

    Additional Photos
General is a 2 1/2 year old fawn male with natural ears. He came to rescue after being bounced around to several families and then being taken in from his last family by a neighbor when he was being neglected. General is an amazing dog that absolutely loves children. He is good with other dogs but cats are unknown. General walks amazingly well on a leash. He ignores the distractions of kids and dogs and cars and other noises going on around him. General loves giving a full body lean and getting pets. He enjoys being brushed, and will nudge for you to continue when you stop. General will not go up the steps. He has been staying downstairs when his family goes up to bed at night and has been perfectly happy, though he did cry the first few nights. General is well behaved. He is not up on his basic obedience commands, but if you open the door and call his name he will come to you. He will even stay in the house if you tell him to when you hold the door open to let someone in. He's even been known to leave food on a plate when it's in his reach. General came to MAGDRL in October 2008. (9)
  • Ginger
Ginger is a 2 1/2 year old black female with natural years. She was rescued by a family when she was a year old and through no fault of her own, her family can no longer keep her. She is good with all other animals. She loves her people and is always ready to have a good time. She especially loves kids, maybe because they taste like food a lot of the time? She still loves to play with her toys but will share them with you if you want to. She would love a couch of her very own to share with you, of course. She is an all around great girl who would love to find her forever home. Ginger came to MAGDRL in November 2008. (9)
  • Goliath
    Additional Photos
Goliath is a 5 year old white deaf male with cropped and standing ears. He was an abuse case, taken from his owner by animal control along with a female Dane. Goliath is mostly deaf and has a vision impairment, but because he spent his entire life around anther Dane he has a self confidence and persona that implies deafness is no issue. He gets along great with other females, large or small, not sure yet about males. His personality suggests he's good with everything. He is heart worm positive and will need to go through treatment before he'll be available for adoption. Goliath is very good on a leash, knows the basic hand signals for sit, down, and come. He's a very loving boy who leans with the best of Danes. Goliath came to MAGDRL in July 2008. (8)
Update 8/24/08 - Goliath is an absolutely amazing boy. He was at our home for a little over two weeks and it's impossible not to fall completely in love with him the minute you meet him. He is completely house trained, was allowed free run of the house and/or dogs room while here with not one accident. His only mischief consisted of devouring a stash of treats and tearing up a small trash basket that happened to only have a dog toy in it that he apparently wasn't ready to discard of. If needed, he will stay in a crate with no objection. While he was here, we did find out that Goliath can hear most things and has slight vision problems that do not slow him down one bit. Due to his vision problems, he tends to look down and watch his humans feet giving the cutest sideways looks you've ever seen... and that wrinkled forehead is to die for! He seems to have more problems with his vision at night or when there isn't much light in a room but again, it doesn't slow him down. He's a playful boy that enjoys having another big dog to play with and he also loves to play with his humans. While here, he lived with three terriers (from 12-22 pounds) and two other danes (males and females, dominant and submissive) and he was perfect with them all. He does tend to get a little mouthy at times with some other dogs through fences or gates but backs down as soon as he's past the barrier. We were not able to test him with cats while he was here. He was around a couple of older kids on an outing and did great. He does get a bit silly when playing or excited so I would recommend constant supervision should he go to a home with toddlers as he may knock them over unintentionally. He is one big cuddle bug! He loves to cuddle on the couch, floor, bed or even in the recliner with (or should I say on) you! He also loves to give hugs and put his head into your chest or lap for neck rubs. This boy has so much love to give! You'd never be able to tell he was part of an abuse case as long as you don't raise your voice (say you're yelling at the spouse) or make a sudden movement with your hand that gives the appearance of a hand going up to hit him. If either of these are done, he immediately drops to the floor and squints his eyes as if he's expecting a beating. Goliath was neutered last week and is recovering well. He still has to have his heartworm treatment and has a couple of small growths that are being observed and treated by his vet. At this time, the vet believes them to be deep follicle infections and they are trying topical treatment on them first. If that doesn't help, they will take tissue samples and send them off to be examined.
Update 10/31/08 - Goliath is truly a wonderful dog. His latest trick is to plant his front two feet on the ground and sling his backside up onto the couch. If you want to share the couch with him, he is glad to share as long as he can have a leg or two on your lap. He is always anxious to be close to you He will also share the couch with the other dogs, but he likes to position himself closest to his human friends. I guess he is just trying to make up for all the years he wasn't loved. He continues to get along well with all the dogs at his foster home. He also tolerates the young puppy jumping and biting. Goliath is good to give a little warning grumble when he has had enough or if someone gets too close to his favorite bones. There have never been any actions beyond this. We will be finished with his heartworm treatment in early November. Because he had such bad reactions to the treatments, the vet opted to forego the final treatment. He will always carry a light heartworm load, but normal heartworm preventative will be his only treatment. Also, we did remove two spots that turned out to be skin cancer. If new spots appear, they will simply have to be removed if and when they come. At this time, we have removed all spots we found. We have discovered a few sounds Goliath can hear, but he is still basically deaf. This, along with his vision impairment are truly NOT disabilities. He is just as smart and active as any other dog. It has been rewarding to spend time with him to learn how much he has to offer. Throughout this time with no exercise, Goliath has been the perfect houseguest. Although he can't run and play, he patiently waits for his time to come. He never expects anything, but always appreciates what time and love you give him. He always seems to be looking forward to finding out what's around the next bend in life. He is happy and loving and will make a wonderful addition to his forever home.
  • Granite
Granite is an approximately 6 month old Dane mix with natural ears. He came to rescue after being found by a family as a stray. He is about 40 pounds right now, so he's going to be quite a bit smaller than a Dane. Granite is living with 2 other dogs in his foster home, and with 2 children. We do not know how he is with cats. Granite is a smart boy who needs some continued work with his training. He still has the puppy problems of play biting and jumping on people to say hello, but his foster home is working on both. Granite is crate trained. He is an playful boy who is also funny and loving. Granite came to MAGDRL in August 2008. (8)

Guinness is looking for a foster home. Can you help?
Guinness is a 4 year old black male with natural ears. He came to rescue from a shelter where he was an owner turn in because his family could no longer care for him. According to the information received with him, he lived with children in his previous home, but was an outdoor dog. Guinness is approximately 31 inches tall and has a thin frame. He seems to be shy around other dogs as if he hasn't had a lot of contact with very many. So far he's shown to be good with females but has not yet been tested with males. He handles easily on a leash but doesn't appear to have had very much work in obedience training. He's a typical Dane in appreciating human contact, he loves to be petted. Guinness came to MAGDRL in July 2008. (8)

    Additional Photos
Gwen is an 8 year old black female with white markings and natural ears. She came from a shelter where she was turned in because her family could no longer afford her. Gwen appears younger than her age implies, and is much more spry and agile than you'd expect. She has been spayed but is heart worm positive with a light load. She will be placed on heart worm preventative to control the heart worms, but is considered too old to withstand the treatment. Gwen is a very calm sweet girl and will make somebody a wonderful companion. As healthy as she appears, that could be quite some time. Gwen is good with everything, and seems to like being alone. She loves her kurunda bed and lies quietly, head up surveying her surroundings. She doesn't appear to have been an outside dog, so its safe to say she's probably house trained. She is quite willing to go out at potty time but is quick to ask to come back inside. Gwen needs a quiet, calm home befitting a senior citizen along with a soft bed or couch. If you'd like to have a sweet loyal loving companion, don't let this girl get away. Gwen came to MAGDRL in October 2007. (8)
Updated 12/30/07 - We have discovered that Gwen has some problems with food aggression with other dogs and will need to be fed separately. She's a perfect angel dane at all other times, gets along with male and female dogs, and kids. Being older she does like her quiet time, laying at your feet or with her head in your lap is her goal in life. She's gained a few pounds and looks fantastic, her coat is slick and velvety. Gwen would make a fabulous companion dog for somebody needing a friend to pal around with. There are no signs of hip or joint problems, she's active and agile enough to go anywhere.
Update 5/11/08 - Gwen's current foster home has a doggie door that she uses and she has never had an accident in the house. Her foster Dad also has worked with her and she has no food aggression anymore. She is great with every dog she has met and is also fine with the cat in her foster home. Update 10/17/08 - Gwen's foster dad reports that she LOVES to spend most of her time on the couch unless it's dinner time or her foster dad comes home, then she's bouncing around like a two year old. But she's still waiting for her forever home to come along and take her home with them. Are you the family this beautiful girl so deserves?

Hailey is looking for a foster home. Can you help?
Hailey is a 5 1/2 year old merle female with cropped and standing ears. She is a beautiful, smart girl who is not good with kids. She was a great dog when her original owners were a couple, but now that they're parents, Hailey is rough with their 2 year old and jealous. Hailey is active and in good shape, and would be great for an active adopter who likes a dog on the go or for a city dweller who likes walking and dog parks. Hailey is good with other dogs, large and small, and was often taken to the dog park in the past. She walks well on leash and is currently living without a fence and stays within the yard's boundaries. She knows sit, down, shake/paw, come when called. She loves to play with her Frisbee and, inside, her stuffies. She seems happy to share but loves a good game of tug and keep away. Hailey is very anxious when her family leaves and barks anxiously as they leave by the door. If reprimanded for barking, she'll growl. This behavior needs to be worked on by first avoiding goodbyes at the door, redirecting with stuffed kongs and bones, distracting with radio/TV noise and praising heavily with treats for appropriate behavior. To help her, she's currently on Xanax. About 2 years ago, Hailey was detained at Los Angeles airport because her crate did not pass FAA regulation and she was delayed at a kennel there for 3 days. When she finally arrived to PA she was emaciated and frightened. This has most likely contributed to her fear. With visitors, Hailey is all leans and love. She did not like it when the evaluator left and showed her displeasure by bark/growling and snapping at air. Again, this is specific behavior that can be worked on and may not manifest in a different home. Hailey is not for first time Dane owners but would be fine with someone who's owned a dog before and is able to provide structure and direction. She feeds off of the emotions of her people and is anxious if they are, etc. Hailey came to MAGDRL in November 2008. (2)

Hannah is an 8 year old harlequin female with cropped ears. When Hannah came into foster care she was terribly weak in the hind end, having difficulties standing for periods of time and getting around in general. She had not been getting any exercise in her last home and had started in with great muscle atrophy which worsened over time. She is making great progress in her foster home, and is now going on walks, building strength and playing. Once Hannah made it to rescue it was discovered she has some stool incontinence which we hoped would get better when she gained her hind end strength back. It has improved greatly however she does have some escapee's periodically, maybe 5 times per week. This is greatly reduced and managed with scheduled feedings and potty times and has been completely manageable. Hannah is living with a male Dane, male Chihuahua and a cat in her foster home. She loves the company of the older male Dane, but has a very high prey drive and is giving the little ones in the home a run for their money. Hannah will need to be placed into a home with medium or large breed dogs only and no cats. Based on her lack of history we also feel she would do best in a home with children over the age of 12 years. Her foster mom has done so much to get this sweet girl back on track, including working with a trainer, teaching her basic obedience and helping her to build her confidence! Hannah is such a sweet girl who truly deserves a loving home to call her own for the rest of her years. Hannah came to MAGDRL in July 2008. (10) - Updated 10/10/08

Honey is a beautiful 2 1/2 year old fawn female with natural ears. She has suffered some loss in her short life and due to the passing of 2 of her family members, she has found her way to rescue. Honey is living with a 1 year old male Dane in her foster home and just loves having a playmate. We have discovered that she is not good with cats. Upon entering rescue Honey was extremely timid, but has quickly come out of her shell. She is actively meeting and greeting people when out and about with her foster mom and is just loving her new found confidence. Honey does startle with loud noises and sometimes with quick moving objects and because of this may be best suited for a family with kids over 12 years old. Honey is 100% trustworthy in the house, loves car rides, is great on a leash and is just a total cuddle bug. She is quite talkative and grumbles and rumbles at you for attention, or anything else she wants. She has not yet warmed up to the idea of toys but loves running around the yard with her house mate playing tag. She is a total love and complete Velcro Dane, following her foster family everywhere they go. Honey came to MAGDRL in May 2008. (3)
Update 9/23/08 - Honey has come leaps and bounds since coming into MAGDRL back in May. She has blossomed beyond belief with her foster family and has become the Dane we all knew she could be with time, patience and love! Honey is silly, goofy and playful and just loves playing and rough housing with the other Danes in the home. It took her a while but, she figured out the joy in playing with toys and running silly, just being a dog. She is a total Velcro girl and just loves her people too! Lounging around the house, cuddling on the couch or hanging in the yard, Honey is your girl! Honey has been able to be integrated with small dogs also, she just needs slow introductions, after which she is all tail wags and love. She likes to grumble at them initially, mostly to let them know she is large and in charge, after which it is all fun and games! So a family with easy going smaller breeds would be fine for Honey as well. Honey has gotten much better with the cats too in her time in foster care. For the most part she will just ignore them, but if the kitties take off running... her interest does peak. Depending on your cats though, she may be best in a home without them. Honey is still weary around younger kids and it appears that there may have been some incident in her past causing her to be so afraid of them. With that being said, Honey should still be placed with kids over 12, just to keep her sanity. Honey is more then ready for her forever home to come find her, hopefully someday soon she will have a family to call her own.
